Narrow Slingback Shoes

Dear Shoe Lady,
I am looking for a pair of navy blue flat slingback shoes in size 9AA. Do you have anything?
Thank you!
Phyllis

Hey Phyllis,
Slingbacks shoes are fabulous options, because of the adjustable ankle strap. I champion any style that aims towards that perfect fit especially for the narrow women’s foot. I would check back in periodically to view any updated styles. Below you will find a solid choice as a jumping off point.

Narrow Shoe Width

Dear Shoe Lady,
My foot measures 3 1/16 across. I usually wear 7.5-8 in ladies shoes. What is my foot width? Is it AA or A? This matters a great deal as AA is often pinching and B is swimming on my foot. Please help!

Thank you,
Joan

Hi Joan,
Even though there should be a size between AA and B (A is essentially the same as AA or 2A), there currently isn’t. You are on the right track by testing out what works for you. In the meantime if a shoe is too small and the result is discomfort, I suggest getting the next width up. I would also take into account if there is any extra padding available in order to compensate for the bit of extra space in the shoe.

Here is a lovely shoe that could work for you.

Naturalizer Australian Shoe Size

Dear Shoe Lady,
I have a pair of Naturalizer wide shaft boots with the size 8 on them (In Australia) is this the same size I order for Naturalizer wide shaft boots from you? I’m looking at the brown array.
Thanks Donna

Hi Donna,
Australian sizes and US sizes follow the same measurements. That being said, you should always take into account the length and width of your foot. Depending on the style and manufacturer, shoes tend to have slight variations. A good place to start is with our size chart, which is in both centimeters and inches.

Large Women Shoes

Dear shoe lady,
A desperate call from a plus size lady. I’ve been wearing mens shoes for almost a decade. I can’t even wear women’s shoes anymore because the sizes are too small. I used to wear women’s size 13 until load and behold my feet spread because of my weight which is fine but I learned at a young age to take care of your self and always be professional. I wear size 13 in mens because there comfortable and wide enough not to hurt my feet but there too long in the length.

I am flat footed and I am on my feet eight to ten hours a day and I love to walk. I am starting school again and there are no professional shoes in any store in NYC that cater my size. I swear off spikey heels because of the fear of the heel breaking and me falling. I measured my foot which is 11 and a half inches to 12 inches in length and 5 and a half inches in width. I will love to learn to wear thick heels for the office. I experiment on shoes in the size of 13 wide but they were tight in the width so I’m thinking 13 double wide to 14 is my size but unsure. Shoe lady you are my last hope HELP!!!! PLEASE A DESPERATE CALL FROM A PLUS SIZE LADY.

Dear Shannel-
DO NOT DESPAIR! Here is the goal. Men’s shoes or women’s shoes, we want to get you the right shoes so that you feel terrific when you are at school and at work.

First, I question your measurements. If you wear a size 13 in men’s shoes and you measure your feet at 11.5 inches to 12 inches, then you need to be looking for a woman’s size 15. They are hard to find. But DesignerShoes.com has 131 styles. Trying to fit into a size 13 shoe will be very depressing indeed.

Second, understanding your real requirement for width can be tricky too. A 5.5 inch measurement for width is a WW or extra wide in a size 15. When you narrow it down to WW, there are only seven choices. But width is deceiving. You may need an even wider width if your feet are thick from top to bottom. Or you may be able to wear a medium or wide if the shoe is long enough, and the right style and your foot is flexible. Read more about wide feet here.

Now back to the problem at hand. As much as we don’t like it, a whole lot of us, your Shoe Lady included, have had to shop in the men’s department for shoes sometimes. For work and for school, I recommend finding a shoe with a thick cushioned sole that is wide enough and long enough. Try the Clark by Tamarac.

I also recommend going to a store that carries New Balance shoes and finding something comfortable in your size. And, one more thing…. in New York City, you may not be able to find shoes in your size, but you can find shoe stores that have pedorthists. Your main goal MUST be to care for those hard to fit feet. Don’t punish them. A good pedorthist will help you understand how to do that. And a pedorthist may be able to help you find some men’s styles that will be appropriate for work and school.

As for those 131 size 15’s – once you have comfortable, every day shoes, then look for shoes for play. There are some very cute ballet flats. In a couple of weeks we will have some “Ugg” style boots in your size. Some of the styles that work may be fabric shoes. Look at the Sanuk styles. Look at the Cape Clogs styles, they are made in Scandinavia with wood soles. We have two styes available now that go to size 15. I recommend the gold –

Cape Clogs Gold Gold at DesignerShoes.com

Gold by Cape Clogs is a Mid Heel Casual Mule

, not something you’ll find in the Men’s Dept.! And look at the new Fit In Clouds line. If the size 14 in that brand works for you, you will have party shoes at less than $30 a pair!

I wish the choices were greater. I know those Shoe Fairies at DesignerShoes.com are working on it for you.

Best wishes in your new academic program,

Are Heels Appropriate for Tall Women?

Hi Shoe Lady,
I am going to this party with my college friends this coming week so i want to ask if a 4-5 inches heels are appropriate for my height. I am standing 5`8 tall my shoe size is 12 hope your answer!

Great question, and you are not alone! I wouldn’t look at heel height in terms of visual appropriateness, but rather what looks good for you, and what is most comfortable. Are you planning on lounging versus dancing? Heels have that undeniable ability to elongate legs, and create a sense of elegance with either jeans or a skirt. I personally love being tall, and jump at the chance of clearing 6 feet in heels every now and again. As long as you feel great in your shoes then you have succeeded. I hope the party is a blast and browse DesignerShoes.com collection of women’s size 12 shoes with a high heel!

Women’s Shoe Width Conversion

Dear Shoe Lady,
I’m hoping that you can help. In the UK I’m a women’s size 7 with a width 6e. Please can you tell me what size that would convert to? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rachel,
You would be looking for a size 9 shoe with at least a double-wide width. I highly recommend taking a look at our size chart to get the closest fit possible. It is based on shoe length in either inches or centimeters as well as shoe width. Knowing your size is always one part of the search. The other part considering your foot’s volume, and the way a shoe is manufactured! Start there, and please let me know what the results are. In the meantime browse DesignerShoes.com selection of women’s size 9WW.

I love dramatic shoes and here is one of our top sellers available in size 9WW.

Wedding Choice for Women’s Size 12 Wide

Dear Shoe Lady,
My daughter is getting married in August and I would like your advice on the best shoe style for her feet. She is not used to wearing heels so the following styles would all be okay. Ros Hommerson Bono in White: Trotters Dora in White: Special Occasions Hillary in White. Her foot measurements are Length 10.7 inches and width 4.50 inches. She also has quite a high instep. I look forward to your advice.

Dear Shiona,
Anything for an Aussie! I’ll give you my best suggestions. Let’s deal with size first, then with style.

Given her foot measurements, I recommend a size women’s size 12 wide. Size 11.5 would work but there are virtually no wedding shoes in this size. The width measurement suggests a Wide edging toward the “extra wide”. But since you’ll get a size 12 , it will probably be slightly wider than the 11.5 would be . If her feet are thick (top to sole) and if it will be hot so they might swell (how hot is it there in August?) you may want to consider a 12WW. But I think a 12W should do.

I am going to suggest that you look at the fabric shoes designed for brides. They are easy to spot stretch if she needs a little more width. And, this is the big one, after the wedding she can have them dyed a different color, like hot pink (a personal favorite).

Now for the style. Attitudes toward wedding shoes are going through changes. My FAVORITE daughter in law, Victoria, got married in baby blue pumps and a white wedding dress. We are seeing more people opt for colored shoes with their white dresses. Just an option. This is her wedding and she should have fun with her apparel choices!

I’ve used the “Shop For” section at DesignerShoes.com to find Bridal/ Dyeable Collection shoes in size 12W.

You will see over 130 choices. You can narrow this list down still further by heel height (you said she wasn’t comfortable with a higher heel. But a low heel may be too low. Mid heels start at 2.5 CM. She may want to limit is to a sandal, like Alana by Special Occasions;

Special Occasions Alana White at AskTheShoeLady.com

a pump, like Betty by Touch Ups,

a flat, like Felicity by Special Occasions,

or a sling back like Shelley by Dyeables,

Whatever she picks, I hope you will have her post some wedding photos, including her shoes!, on our Facebook page
